Thanks! That's what I really love about vectors--they have design-oriented feel, but there's a world of interesting customization you can give with the right effects here and there.

Assuming you mean the spiral background, I actually made a solid shape that matched up exactly with each background rectangle in a slightly darker color and then put an opacity mask over that shape. The mask consists of a larger rectangle filled with one of the included pattern swatches--"Chinese Spirals" was the name of the pattern, in black and white--and then a radial gradient from black to transparent over that to create the lighter area. Then pull out of the mask, and voila!
